Color appearance in high-dynamic-range imaging

چکیده
When viewing images on a monitor, we are adapted to the lighting conditions of our viewing environment as well as the monitor itself, which can be very different from the lighting conditions in which the images were taken. As a result, our perception of these photographs depends directly on the environment in which they are displayed. For high-dynamic-range images, the disconnect in the perception of scene and viewing environments is potentially much larger than in conventional film and photography. To prepare an image for display, luminance compression alone is therefore not sufficient. We propose to augment current tone reproduction operators with the application of color appearance models as an independent preprocessing step to preserve chromatic appearance across scene and display environments. The method is independent of any specific tone reproduction operator and color appearance model (CAM) so that for each application the most suitable tone reproduction operator and CAM can be selected. © 2006 SPIE and IS&T. Color imaging technologies with higher dynamic range, wider color gamut, and greater bit depth require new and/or different ways of thinking about color. In particular, color appearance issues become more important. This paper discusses some recent research on the application of color and image appearance modeling to high-dynamic-range and wide-color-gamut imaging.
متن کاملValidation of Color Managed 3D Appearance Acquisition
Image-based appearance acquisition algorithms are able to generate realistic 3D models of real objects but have previously not taken care of calibrated color space. We integrate a color managed high-dynamic range imaging technique into a recent appearance acquisition algorithm and generate models in CIE XYZ color space. We compare the final models with spectrophotometric measurements and comput...
متن کاملCares and Concerns of CIE TC8-08: Spatial Appearance Modeling and HDR Rendering
CIE Division 8 concerns itself with suggesting methods for interpreting complex color stimuli, or more specifically images. To accurately model color appearance of images we can no longer consider pixels as simple patches viewed in isolation. TC8-08 is tasked with examining spatial color appearance models, with an emphasis on high-dynamic range images. High-dynamic range (HDR) images are typica...
متن کاملRendering HDR Images
Color imaging systems are continuously improving, and have now improved to the point of capturing high dynamic range scenes. Unfortunately most commercially available color display devices, such as CRTs and LCDs, are limited in their dynamic range. It is necessary to tone-map, or render, the high dynamic range images in order to display them onto a lower dynamic range device. This paper describ...
متن کاملTone Reproduction and Color Appearance Modeling: Two Sides of the Same Coin?
Color appearance models and tone reproduction algorithms are currently solving different problems. These classes of algorithms are also developed and used in different communities. However, they show remarkable functional similarities. Perhaps there is reason to think that they could in fact be one and the same thing. The advantages would be that we could achieve dynamic range reduction while t...
